Lighter than air ballooning is fueled by propane, which is a hot burning clean fuel.
As the air inside of the balloon is heated it creates lift. Once the air inside the balloon cools down it will start to descend.
For recreational flight you need to have a private pilot’s license. In order to fly passengers for profit you must have a commercial pilot’s license. All lighter than air pilots most go through the FAA lighter than air pilot’s training.
Yes! Ballooning is a very safe activity. The balloon pilot takes diligent steps to ensure your flight is as safe as possible. Flight plans along with weather forecasts are closely monitored prior to the flight. Safety is such a high priority, that the passengers must understand that if the weather forecast becomes unfavorable, a last minute cancellation may occur.
Flight path is determined by the wind direction. Balloonists can steer the balloon by changing their altitude to make use of different wind speeds and directions.
The total flying experience lasts approximately three hours. The balloon flight itself is about 40 minutes to one hour depending on the availability of landing sites.
Lift is determined by ambient temperature, humidity, and weight. For an average temperature of 65 degrees, our basket can hold up to five people. This is, however, based on the weight of each individual. The maximum weight excluding the pilot is 1100 pounds. The passenger load may need to be adjusted for the weather conditions.
